All in the details
Stills featured in Jean-Pierre Melville's 'Le Cercle Rouge' (1970). They depict Corey's (played by Alain Delon) former love. We never learn her name, hear her voice, or glimpse flashbacks of their relationship. What Melville does is use subtle techniques to show Corey's growing alienation from her/ and indeed women through his reactions to the old photos he comes across in different stages of the film. The first we see of 'her' is a photo from his wallet which he leafs through as he his returned his former belongings on release from prison.
After which Corey pays a visit to a shady character, who now is clearly seeing his former love. As she listen in on the conversation she strikes a similar pose to the photos we previously saw her in.
Just a small detail, but nonetheless it shows Melville's power at repetition and translating more than just an image.
