Follow my lead

August Sander

The question of influence and being as original as one can is often posed to artists/photographers etc..
Should one look at others? There is the fear of course that by doing so one can fall into the trap and adopt a style that isn't your own.
But then look at Diane Arbus would she achieved her own personal vision without taking a little look at the likes of Sander, and experimenting with flash after seeing the raw night shots by Weegee?

And in a roundabout way new paths will naturally lead to new places.Without Arbus would the likes of Nan Goldin, and Larry Clark come to be? Diane is of course crowned as one of the most influential photographers of our time.
The young and freaky 'ghost- like' twins from Kubrick's 'The Shining' are supposedly a direct link to Arbus' infamous twin shot, as below.
