You must believe in Bill
Hailed as the pioneer of colour photography, and for capturing the moments that we tend to bypass William Eggleston still stands in a league of his own as far as I am concerned.
I was fortunate to see his retrospective at the Whitney Museum, NY last November and was literally blown away. Eggleston has the magical gift of making the mundane beautiful through his vibrant use of colour, and composition.
Though somewhat evasive in interviews, and often through incoherent mumbles he either manages to dodge the question, turn it into a rhetorical reply, or just about utter a monosyllabic yes/no.
Would his photographs work as well were he to shoot in black and white?
Without a doubt they work as he has a great eye, but they work of course in a different way.
Imitators may follow, yet never manage do they conjure the genius of and spirit of a William Eggleston snap.
