Looking and really seeing

Hard to fully translate the infinite and inexplicable
effect Andrei Tarkovsky has had over me..

The initiation, if you like, to his creations, thoughts, masterpieces... began at college. A teacher recommended a book of his writings. The cover of one of his first films Ivan's Childhood persisted in catching my eye leaving me wondering till I finally took a chance and borrowed it. The film came before the book in this instance. That's by the by.

The essential thing is that he really stuck this deep cord within me. Tarkovsky broke through boundaries, and was a true visionary. He made me believe and have faith that following your own vision is primordial, and that art can fall into and cross so many genres. His work leaves me to this day mesmerised, transfixed, and in aspiration of such greatness. To look at things and really see, not to just skim over; how the smallest thing can have such symbolism and beauty. In his dreamlike mist we are not only spoiled with such a vast world of rich and aesthetic imagery, but the way in which he can leave things/films open ended have left a never ending tale of mystery that keep me
coming back and back for more.
