Bill Rowlinson

Bill Rowlinson

Not only inspirational, the brief insight/ talk I went to last night on Master Printer Bill Rowlinson opened up a new way of thinking, of sorts.
I mean, naive as it sounds I was never really aware of these 'old school' printers that the great photographers so heavily rely, or as the case may be these days, relied on.

Without Bill, certain prints by the great Julia Margaret Cameron/ Sarah Moon/ Bill Brandt prints would not have come to pass. I enjoyed hearing that the negatives, especially Brandt's were often ' buggers' - to work with.
Also what a character Rowlinson was, as you would expect or rather hope he would be...
He would follow the photographers brief then 'do his own thing' and nine times out of ten they would go with his. The tape recording that was played at the end, I found most interesting, we heard a 12 minute snippet from the 45minute conversation between Bill and Branka. It was part of a project to get a book together before he passed away. All in all I suppose what I really took away that credit - full credit should not always be given completely to the photographer. The Printer is all important.
