Nan & Ryan

Nan Goldin

The real and immediate trigger that linked McGinley's work to Nan Goldin for me, was recalling Goldin's self portrait's with a black eye.
Of course Goldin's work is unstaged and more of a visual diary, this highly personal record of her life marks the history of her failed relationships, nights out with friends etc...
Generally speaking McGinley, as far as his recent work is concerned, does not wait for the photo to happen, but prefers to make it happen as it were.
But there is something very similar with the look of Goldin and McGingley's photographs (his 2007 series particularly). Though it is evident the latter has a more lighthearted approach, Goldin of course is renowned for her 'heavier' and raw depictions of changing emotional states. More of my aimless musings to follow no doubt.....
