Mysterious Clarity

Alexander Grinberg

My penchant for comparing and spotting the similarities has no end it so seems. Grinsberg's nude portraits are so evocative of Bellocq's reclining women with their faces masked/ scratched off.

Though more hazy and dreamlike Grinsberg's series lacks the mystery which I believe Bellocq achieves somewhat ironically in his clearer more subjective portraits. The clarity tends to leave a more powerful aftertaste, and only emphasises the reality of the scene. They explain more and yet they don't.
The composition and framing tells us more, unlike Grinsberg who has a much tighter cropping of the subject. This in turn may help render Bellocq's 'women' more vulnerable, the viewer is given more information, and with the distance the subjects appear smaller, somewhat engulfed in their surroundings.
